Red Yeast Rice and Statin Therapy in Patients with Hypercholesterolemia and the Comorbidities: A Retrospective Cohort Study on Lipid-Lowering Effects and Cardiovascular Outcomes 服用紅麴及STATIN類藥品對降血脂效果及心血管事件之回溯性研究
In the realm of lipid management and cardiovascular health, both red yeast rice (RYR) and statins have emerged as significant players. While statins are well-established in medical practice, RYR, a natural alternative, has gained attention for its potential lipid-lowering effects. However, the comparative efficacy of these treatments and their impact on cardiovascular outcomes, particularly in patients with comorbidities, remains a subject of ongoing inquiry.
Our study addresses this critical question by analyzing data from over 337,000 patients with hyperlipidemia, drawn from the Chang Gung Research Database between 2016 and 2021. Using propensity score matching methodology, we compared the effects of RYR and statins on lipid profiles and cardiovascular outcomes. Our findings provide insight into the comparative effectiveness of RYR and statins in managing hyperlipidemia and reducing cardiovascular risks. We also evaluated the impact of these treatments on patients with comorbidities, such as diabetes, hypertension, and kidney or liver diseases, which may offer enhanced benefits for certain patient populations. Additionally, the potential benefits of combining RYR and statin therapy became apparent during the observation. This research highlights the potential implications of our findings for clinical practice and future research in lipid management and cardiovascular health.
