Speech Title
Human flourishing and the freedom to learn
In this talk I will propose that the overall goal of education is human flourishing. I will suggest that flourishing applies to individual flourishing and to flourishing in social systems, including institutions and organisations. Recently, there is increasing interest in human flourishing within the fields of educational philosophy and learning science. There is an emerging concordance as to the meaning of flourishing and how this can be achieved within educational systems. In this talk, I will present our approach to flourishing based on what we term person-centred education. This pedagogical stance has its roots in the educational philosophy of John Dewey and the psychological theory of Carl Rogers. To facilitate flourishing for and release the intrinsic motivation in our students, it is essential to centre the relationships between learners and educators, to promote freedom for learning and, for educators to adopt a growth mindset.
