Overview of Healthcare System in Ghana and Possible Areas of Collaboration with TCVGH

The Ghanaian HealthCare System is aimed at ensuring Universal Health Coverage and has an organized system that spans form Community Health Planning Systems (CHPS) compounds, Health Centres, District Hospitals, Regional Hospitals and Teaching Hospitals. Patients are seen first seen at the primary health levels and referred across the spectrum up to teaching hospitals/academic medical centres. There is a National Health Insurance Scheme that takes care of primary, secondary and some aspects of tertiary care. Patients who require advanced care such as cardiac surgery or interventions have to pay out-of-pocket which poses a huge challenge to patients and healthcare workers. Few private health insurance schemes exist for some corporate organizations.

The University of Ghana Medical Centre is an academic medical centre with a vision to provide world-class patient care, training and research. It has been in operation for the past 6 years and we seek to provide patient and family-centered-care. The strategic focus of the hospital is to provide minimally invasive surgery/procedures, organ transplant, advanced diagnostics, and advanced oncology care as well as state of the art information technology system. The hospital however lacks expertise and equipment in the mentioned areas and would welcome a collaboration with Taiwan Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH).
